Evangelos J. Giamarellos-Bourboulis MD, PhD
Professor Evangelos J. Giamarellos-Bourboulis is Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He is the founder and director of the Hellenic Institute for the Study of Sepsis, Director of the MSc Programme in Infectious Diseases at the University of Athens, and Supervisor of the Immunology of Infectious Diseases Laboratory and Outpatient Clinic at ATTIKON University General Hospital.
He graduated from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1994 and obtained his PhD in 1998. He completed his specialization in Internal Medicine in 2001 and subsequently received advanced training in the immunology of infectious diseases at Radboud University Medical Centre in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He has held the position of Professor of Internal Medicine since 2018.
His principal research interests focus on the pathogenesis and immunology of sepsis, immune dysregulation, immunoparalysis, precision immunotherapy, and the development of targeted therapeutic approaches for severe infections. His research also extends to autoinflammatory diseases, particularly hidradenitis suppurativa, and the immunomodulatory properties of antimicrobial agents.
Professor Giamarellos-Bourboulis has made major contributions to the understanding of sepsis-associated immune dysfunction and the development of personalized immunotherapeutic strategies. He led the SAVE and SAVE-MORE clinical trials, which contributed to the regulatory approval of anakinra for the treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia. He also designed and coordinated the ImmunoSep clinical trial, investigating precision immunotherapy based on distinct immune dysfunction phenotypes in sepsis.
His scientific work has contributed to the recognition of hidradenitis suppurativa as an autoinflammatory disorder and to the clinical development of biological therapies for this condition. He has served as principal investigator and coordinator in numerous international multicentre clinical trials addressing sepsis, severe infections, COVID-19 and immune-mediated diseases.
He has served as President of the European Sepsis Alliance, is a member of the Board of the Global Sepsis Alliance, President of the Hellenic Society of Chemotherapy, and coordinator of the Hellenic Sepsis Study Group. He has received several national and international scientific distinctions, including the Young Investigator Research Award of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in 2009.
Scientific output: Professor Giamarellos-Bourboulis has authored 627 peer-reviewed scientific publications, with 50,258 citations and an h-index of 102.
Professor Giamarellos-Bourboulis has designed and conducted numerous investigator-initiated clinical studies, including EMBRACE, ImmunoSep, ACCESS, SAVE-MORE, SAVE, ACHIEVE, ESCAPE, PROVIDE, INCLASS, ACTIVATE, INTELLIGENCE, SPECIFY.
His scientific and clinical activities continue to focus on translating advances in immunology and precision medicine into improved diagnosis and treatment of patients with sepsis and other severe inflammatory conditions.
